When people think about spring cleaning, they usually think of their home. But despite spring cleaning being a primarily domestic pursuit, decluttering your business is perhaps one of the most priceless things you’ll ever do.
You might be able to afford to hire in cleaning staff for the job, but it’s also important to make sure that you know where everything is in the office. That involves decluttering, organising, and making everything sparkly.
Check out our tips and techniques, get to work, and before you know it, you’ll be one giant leap closer to a cleaner and more efficient business.
Reduce your paperwork
Although we agree that going paperless is a great way to reduce clutter and get organised, we understand that for most businesses, it’s not yet a fully realised idea.
So for now, take anything that is out of date or unimportant and put it through a shredder.
Move everything else into piles based on importance, type, and date. Give your documents their very own separate filing area, which is tidy and easy to reach.
Colour code everything and type up your ‘colour coding system for filing’ which you can then place on the wall.
Take out the virtual trash
Much like a big old dustbin, your computer’s trash folder holds heaps of old stuff you no longer need – so get rid the contents.
Methodically go through each file and folder on your PC or laptop, including the downloads folder, and delete anything you no longer have any use for. Same for the mailbox!
Now label all of your files sensibly to finish the job. Start with your personal desktop and storage areas, sift through each file and folder, renaming everything in plain, understandable language. Simple, easy to find, and better to file.
If you have files in separate folders that you feel you can combine, make sure you do so. You’ll feel lighter, brighter, and more efficient in no time.
And don’t forget, the virtual cloud that lives on the internet is equally as magic. So save copies of your files or pictures to a cloud-based service like Dropbox or Google Drive.
Rearrange your furniture
The way in which desks are arranged can really affect an office environment. Take a step back and assess whether you could create more space by moving the desks. Have them facing each other rather than line up in a row to create a more open, collaborative working culture.
In addition to this, don’t be afraid to put up a few motivational pictures or framed posters, add some plants. You’ll be amazed how this can serve to lift your mood on a rainy day.
Spruce up your staff area
If your staff doesn’t have a comfortable place in which to sit and enjoy their lunch, morale will plummet pretty quickly.
Make sure you add a bit of vibrancy to your kitchen or breakout area with plants, posters, or some upcycled furniture.
