This week is National Spring Cleaning Week; the perfect time to help blow off the cobwebs and breathe life into your home after the winter months. A good old fashioned spring clean is in order but it can be hard to muster up the motivation to pull on those marigolds and get scrubbing.
Shurgard is here to help. We’ve worked out a plan of action so you don’t have to. Follow the below steps to achieve a perfectly spring cleaned home in just one week.
Day 1 and 2: Clear space, clear mind
The first thing to do when embarking on a productive spring cleaning session is to give yourself some space. The thought of a full-house clean can be daunting, especially if you have a lot of junk to clean around. Work out what you actually need in the house and what you could do with getting rid of. Apply the save, scrap or store process and you’ll be on your way to giving yourself some physical and mental space before the deep clean. This process is often the hardest and the most time-consuming so give yourself a good couple of days.
Day 3: Tackling the wardrobe
Once you’ve got rid of the main bulk of clutter, attacking the wardrobe is usually the next best thing to do. Reorganising your wardrobe is a great way to breathe new life into your home this spring. Put all of your winter clothes in boxes and store under the bed or your nearest Shurgard. Bringing some order to your wardrobe and knowing where everything is will make your morning routine that little less stressful. Try not to take any more than one day to do this – the longer it takes, the less likely you’ll be to part ways with some of those dodgy ensembles.
Day 4: Everything but the kitchen sink
The kitchen is prime territory for hoarding unnecessary amounts of clutter. Tackle it head on; pull everything out of cupboards and drawers (one at a time) and only put back what you actually use. You probably don’t need that enormous array of mugs and teapots and we can guarantee you can get rid of those Tupperware lids with no matching containers…ditch them all!
Day 5: Embrace Life Hacks
When it comes to the deep clean, ‘life hacks’ (AKA shortcuts!) can be really useful. Vacuuming is an arduous task if you live in anything larger than a studio, so tips to make the process more productive are always welcome. Sprinkle baking soda onto the carpet before hovering. It brings pale carpets up looking bright and smelling fresh. Sprinkle on before you go to bed, leave over night and hoover up in the morning. Viola!
Day 6: The devil is in the detail
After clearing the clutter and doing the majority of the tough cleaning, you need to dedicate some time to the details. Areas like your keyboard, door handles and bathroom tiles are some of the trickiest places to clean, and are the areas that people notice the most. Using a toothbrush can be the most thorough way to clean these nooks and crannies. A quick scrub with a toothbrush will get rid of those pesky little bits of dirt. Just make sure you use a different brush to the one you clean your teeth with everyday…
Day 7: Finishing touches
Once your home has been turned upside down and is looking brand new, give it the finishing touch with some lovely spring flowers. The floral scents and the splash of colour will lift your mood and welcome spring in to your home with open arms.
