If you have a room in your house that you want to make feel bigger – read on! We have some clever tips and tricks which can create the illusion of a more spacious area. All without having to knock down any walls too.
Light vs. Dark Flooring
Both dark and light floors have their advantages. Lighter flooring like creams and neutrals will typically help open up the space. If you have pale furniture too this will create a cohesive look which will give your house an airy feel.
Darker flooring gives depth and contrast to a room. If this is more your taste don’t feel like you have to avoid it in a small room. Petite rooms can carry a dark floor, but you will need to open up the space with lighter toned walls and ceilings.
Uniform Flooring
Using the same floor style across several rooms can also give the illusion of space. The rooms will feel connected – training the eye to think they are part of a bigger whole.
Direction of Flooring
The direction the panels are laid can also influence the feel of a room. Typically running floor boards parallel to the longest wall will instantly make the room feel more spacious.
For something more distinctive, diagonal flooring can also deceive the eyes into thinking the space is larger than it is. Plus looks stylish too!
We also recommend to go for larger sized planks or tiles. The less joins in the room will prevent the flooring from looking busy and therefore more cramped.
A Large Rug
If you don’t want to change the flooring, but do want to accessorise your way to a more spacious room – choose one large area rug. Place it in the centre of the room, leaving a space between the surrounding furniture. This will keep the lines simple and stop the space looking overcrowded. Ideally go for a light coloured rug with a simple texture to add to the spacious illusion too.
