How To Clean a Microwave in 8 Steps

Bubbling sauces and melted cheese can drop onto your microwave, leaving a right mess behind. Shut the door – and it is all gone right? Well, no (if only!). We agree it is easy to forget about the inside of your microwave when you are cleaning your kitchen, but it really isn’t hard to remove the food debris.

If you follow these 8 simple steps, you can give your microwave a good clean.  Do it regularly and it will keep your microwave fresh and ready for the next use.

How to clean a microwave in 8 steps

1. Half-fill a microwaveable bowl with water, and squeeze in half of a lemon. Place the remaining lemon in the bowl of water

2. Set your microwave on full power for about 5 minutes. You will want the water to boil and cause the sides to steam up.

3. Wait a minute or so before removing your bowl. And do so carefully! It will be very hot!

4. Use a sponge or cloth to wipe away the residue from the base, sides and roof of your microwave. The lemony steam should have loosened up the grime and dirt making it much easier to clean.

5. Put the turntable in the dishwasher or wash it up with your usual dish washing liquid.

6. For any stubborn stuck-on splatters try a water and washing up liquid mixture. Use a non-scratch pad like Spontex or Scotch-Brite and rub away to gently lift the food.

7. Clean the doors with a wet sponge dipped in baking soda; and try a mix of vinegar and water for the window.  Wipe dry with a paper towel or microfibre cloth to avoid any drying spots or patches left behind.

8. If any strong odours are lingering in your microwave, then place a bowl with baking soda inside it. This will help to absorb any nasty leftover smells, leaving your microwave perfect for the next round.

The process is quite quick, and if you can keep on top of it regularly then it shouldn’t take too much effort either! Simple and effective.
