Decluttered your home? Here’s what to do with it!

The changing seasons often spark a desire for change in our lives. Just packing away summer holiday items and dusting off warmer coats might ignite the desire to declutter.  If that is you – you might now be wondering what to do with all the stuff.  You really don’t want it all to become clutter once again!

It is likely you have created two sections: Broken/rubbish and usable stuff.  The rubbish can be taken to your local waste and recycling centre to ensure it is disposed of correctly (ideally recycled). The rest? Here are some great ideas of what to do with it all.

A Local Online Marketplace

Exchange your unwanted items for some extra cash!  Local online marketplaces are a great opportunity to sell to your neighbours.  Typically it will be less hassle as you don’t need to organise postage and the process can be relatively quick.

Take a look at ‘Facebook Marketplace’, ‘Nextdoor’, ‘Gumtree’ and ‘Shpock’.  It is very straightforward – simply take some photos, write a description and upload.  Set your location to ensure you capture people in the vicinity to make it as seamless as possible.

Specialist Selling Sites

If you want to sell a certain type of item, a dedicated website is a great option.  These types of sites attract an audience who are specifically browsing for your product, so the success rate is high.

‘Depop’ is great for quirky/ vintage clothing and ‘Vinted’ is perfect for second hand high-street brands. You can also look at sites like ‘Musicmagpie’ for phones and ‘WeBuyBooks’ for, well, books!

Freecycling

The idea of freecycling is to make it easy for people to give away their unwanted, but reusable items, to others.  Reducing the amount of items that end up in landfill is a fantastic imitative.  As the saying goes – one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure!

You can start by asking friends and family if they would be interested in your items.  Otherwise, look at dedicated exchange sites such as ‘Freecycle’.  You can link up with people who have a need for the objects you want to gift.

All sorts of items go on Freecycle – from furniture, bikes and scraps of material.  It is frequently used by people looking to upcycle things.

Car Boot Sale

Not everything is online these days! There are still many car boot sales and markets that would make a perfect opportunity to sell your pieces.

Check local newspapers, schools and community groups for any upcoming dates!

Donate to charity

Donating your items to a charity is also an excellent way to declutter your home, and give back to a good cause.

Visit your local high street for charity shops to see if they are taking collections.  Alternatively, you can arrange home pick-ups from most charities – you can often book your collection slot online. It is really easy, and obviously provides much needed support.

Store It

If you have decluttered the house, but still like/want your items – storage is an excellent back-up plan.  The ideal way to keep hold of stuff, whilst also keeping your house looking organised and streamlined.

Self-Storage at Shurgard is simple. You can find  your local storage facility, compare costs of different size units and book it all online.  There are no long term contracts, so you can keep the storage unit for as long, or as short, as you need. Plus, you don’t need to commit upfront! It is just a clean and dry storage space that you can use as an extension to your house. The perfect way to keep your home decluttered.
