Balmy summer nights can become even more magical if you create the right ambient lighting.
You also don’t even need to spend a lot – with a little bit of DIY you can create something special and unique. Who needs an excuse to sit on the patio with a cool drink watching the sun go down?!
These stunning outdoor lighting ideas are sure to inspire you!
1. Candle Jars
These candle jars are so pretty. And nice and simple too!
Start this upcycle, by prepping the jars – cleaning and removing the label. Then use some wire to wind around the neck and create a loop that can be used for hanging. Partially fill with sand and place your candle or tea light in the middle. Hang them anywhere and everywhere!
2. Feature Lights
Make a feature of a pagoda, arch or porch area with strings of lights.
Thread the lights through the woodwork or weave into the foliage. Opt for solar powered for enviro and wallet friendly! These exposed bulbs make a really sweet feature. Or wrap around tree trunks for an enchanted forest effect.
3. Paper Lanterns
Add a pop of colour against your green foliage and include some paper lanterns.
These can easily be made with colourful paper bags and a string of fairy lights. Just snip a little hole in the bottom of the bag, pop the light through and seal with tape. The top of the bag can be closed shut – and add some ribbon for an extra touch of flair.
4. Tin Can Lanterns
Tin can lanterns are super sweet and can be personalised to your own taste.
Start by cleaning out your old cans and remove the labels. Next you will need to freeze the can to stop the metal bending too much (fill with water and pop in the freezer overnight).
Then puncture your design with a nail and hammer. Freestyle if you want or draw the design onto the can for a more structured look.
When finished, add some sand and pop your tea light into the can. Watch the patterned light project across the garden.
5. Wine Bottle Tiki Torch

This one is a win-win. Share a bottle of wine, then use the bottle to make a gorgeous Tiki torch! They’ll also help repel the bugs (triple win?).
Fill 1/3 of the bottle with glass stones or pebbles, followed by liquid paraffin – we recommend using a citronella scent for the best insect repellent.
Then you’ll need a copper coupling to fit into the mouth of the bottle (1/4 inch x 3/8 inch) – wrap it in Teflon tape so it will create a snug fit in the bottle. Push the wick through, and secure the coupling in. Now you’re ready for terrific Tiki lighting!
6. Mason Jar Light
These mason jars are a cute way to jazz up an outside coffee table – and cost efficient too!
You can upcycle any food jars you have around the house or buy new from somewhere like Hobbycraft.
Then you need to rip up pieces of paper – newspaper or tissue paper will work – and glue to the outside of your jar. Mix up the sizes and colours for vibrant effect or use a uniform pattern for a sleeker style.
Finish by using a tea light (with the lid off), or you can use battery operated if you prefer.
Beautiful lighting for a truly unique and magical garden. Which one are you going to try? Or do you have another idea? Let us know in the comments below!
