Plants are great when they are alive: they make your home look nicer, they purify the air, they can calm you and reduce stress.
But if you are one of those serial plant murderers, you’ll probably wonder if there’s anything else that you won’t kill.
You probably have endless questions in your head when this happens: did I water too much? Or too little? Was the light right? Was the soil wrong?
Well, don’t give up – maybe you just didn’t choose the right plant! That’s why we have picked out some lovely plants that require little care and hopefully they’ll stick around for a while.
Sansevieria
(or also known as-mother-in-law tongue or snake plant)
If you are one of those forgetful (or lazy) ones, then sansevieria is the perfect plant for you. Strangely enough, these plants thrive on neglect so that means they can survive months without water.
According to a NASA study, sansevieria is capable of purifying air by removing toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene and toluene.
It absorbs carbon dioxide at night and releases oxygen at night, this means it’s the perfect plant for the bedroom.
Caring tips: Make sure the soil is dry to the touch before you water, and water around the edges of the pot rather than directly into the middle of the plant.
Peace lily
If you have been wondering forever whether you water your past-plant-victims too much, or too little, then this is the plant to go for. Peace lily will tell you when it is thirsty and needs watering by drooping its leaves.
The NASA Clean Air Study found that peace lily can clean indoor air of toxins such as benzene and formaldehyde.
Succulent
If you love plants but don’t have a lot of space for them, these little beauties are perfect for you. They come in endless varieties so you can always find one that you’ll like.
All they need is a sunny spot and a little bath every couple of weeks. A bath you say? What does that mean? Simply remove the plant from the outer pot and put it in a bowl filled with water and let it soak for about an hour.
Pothos
These plants are pretty impossible to kill. So serial-plant-killers, give this one a try!
Pothos can thrive in a wide range of environment so a lot of light or too little light; a lot of water or too little water – chances are they will survive.
Also pothos is extremely easy propagate, all you have to do is to cut a piece of the stem about 6 to 12” long, remove the lower leaves and place it in water until its roots. And soon you can start giving plants to your family – the perfect way to fix your plant-murderer reputation.
Aloe vera
This spiky plant is super easy to grow and has countless healing properties – it can be used to treat minor burns or dry skin cuts.
Aloe vera is an incredibly tolerant plant. It can thrive under minimal care and under any condition, such as low light and lack of watering. In fact over watering is more likely to kill it than not.
ZZ plant
This plant can tolerate months of neglect, it can be kept in low light yet it will continue to look as good as new.
And if you are a believer in Feng Shui, the ZZ plant fulfils the criteria of a good one. But if you don’t, can’t you say no to this beautiful shiny green plant that is also able to remove volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene?
